After a period of uncertainties and total confusion, the new leadership of the Gabonese Democratic Party (PDG) now displays the ambitions of the former ruling party, those of regaining the status of the country’s leading political force in the upcoming presidential election in 2025.
“Our main mission at the moment is to prepare a congress that will define our future with the goal of our participation, which I hope will be successful, in all electoral deadlines that will be set; I believe in it, I firmly believe in it, in the PDG we have the necessary resources to be the first in the pack,” said Paul Biyoghe Mba, 1st vice president of the party during his speech commemorating the 56th anniversary of the PDG.
On August 30, 2023, the regime of Ali Bongo was swept away by military personnel gathered within the Committee for the Transition and Restoration of Institutions (CTRI), led by General Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema. On that day, the PDG thus lost the power it had held for 56 years.
While acknowledging its mistakes, the PDG nevertheless recognizes its responsibility in the loss of power. It had not taken into account the numerous recurring and nagging complaints of the population.
