Staying in Cap Town, South Africa from February 13 to 16, the Minister of Justice, Paul-Marie Gondjout, participated in the establishment of an ad hoc commission tasked with identifying and evaluating the varied support needs of Gabon. This is part of the implementation of the Transition program for the restoration of institutions initiated in Gabon.
At the invitation of Maropene Ramokgopa, Minister in the Presidency, responsible for Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation of government programs in South Africa, Paul-Marie Gondjout, Minister of Justice, Keeper of the Seals, made an official visit from February 13 to 16, 2024, to Cap Town in South Africa. The visit included a bilateral meeting between the two hosts, followed by an open working session between the two ministers, their key collaborators, and the ambassador, high commissioner of the Gabonese Republic in South Africa, André William Anguile.
The visit also led to the establishment of an ad hoc working committee tasked with jointly identifying and evaluating the varied support needs expressed by Gabon in the Transition program for the restoration of institutions, along with South African partners. Carrying a message from the Transition President, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, to his counterpart Cyril Ramaphosa, the Ministry of Justice stated that Paul-Marie Gondjout emphasized “the excellence of the bilateral relations between the two states since the fight against the apartheid regime, and the advent of Nelson Mandela, the first black president of the Republic of South Africa.”
It is worth noting that Nelson Mandela had “chosen the city of Libreville as his first destination upon his release from prison in 1990.” In addition to the establishment of this commission, in the electoral field and in the perspective of the process leading to free, transparent, credible, and inclusive elections, “the host country has shown willingness to support Gabon.” In Cap Town, where Paul-Marie Gondjout recalled the ties that bind Gabon and South Africa, at the end of this visit, the Gabonese and South African parties agreed to hold regular consultations, in order to promote strengthened cooperation.
