Winner announced in Senegal’s presidential election, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, received congratulations from the president of the Transitional Government in Gabon, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema on Tuesday, March 26. The Gabonese head of state congratulated his newly elected counterpart through his X account, acknowledging that “Senegal has once again demonstrated its commitment to democratic values despite the crisis that has shaken the country in recent months.”
Bassirou Diomaye Faye, 44, became the youngest president of Senegal on March 24, winning in the first round. He will lead his country for the next 5 years. This prompted the Transitional President of Gabon, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, to send his warm congratulations to him through X.
In his message, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema expressed confidence that the multifaceted cooperation between Gabon and Senegal will be further strengthened. “I have no doubt that this multifaceted cooperation will be further consolidated with your assumption of the presidency of the Republic of Senegal,” General Oligui Nguema said.
Taking the floor for the first time, Bassirou Diomaye Faye assured Senegal’s partners that his country would remain a “reliable and trustworthy ally” to all foreign partners who are “respectful.” In turn, the Transitional President emphasized that “Senegal and Gabon have always maintained friendly and fraternal ties based on mutual trust and shared brotherhood.”
It is worth noting that General Oligui Nguema served in Senegal as the defense attaché at the Gabonese embassy during the regime of Ali Bongo Ondimba.
Released from prison just over a week ago, Senegal’s new strongman presented himself as the “choice of rupture.” He becomes the fifth and youngest president of this country of 18 million inhabitants.
