In a statement this Thursday, March 7, the Réagir party expressed its disagreement regarding the method of designating the representatives of political parties at the National Dialogue. The former opposition party is calling on the government to correct its course and is calling for the urgent establishment of an autonomous national committee to manage these future meetings.

Last March 4, the Ministry of Institutional Reform and the Ministry of the Interior and Security asked legally constituted political parties to each designate, within a 72-hour period, four of their representatives from among whom the participants in the National Dialogue will be chosen. In response to a statement on Thursday, March 7, the Réappropriation du Gabon party, Réagir, expressed its “surprise and disagreement at the government’s decision to designate the representatives of political parties instead of the parties themselves.”

Opposing what it considers an “unacceptable intervention,” Réagir believes that the Transition government’s approach is reminiscent of similar methods used to choose opposition party representatives during the political consultation of February 2023. The party denounces government intrusion into the internal affairs and management of political parties and calls on the Transition authorities to scrupulously respect the law. Réagir is surprised by the Transition government’s call to the entire political class, especially since, during an interview with Radio France Internationale (RFI), the Minister of Institutional Reform stated that out of over 100 political parties, only 59 had contributed to the Dialogue call as of January 19, 2024.

“The demand addressed to all political parties today to present their lists raises a question: are political parties invited to the dialogue simply to meet a quota or to defend a project for the country’s future?” queries Réagir, emphasizing that these methods, reminiscent of those used in 2023, do not guarantee serious results at the end of the talks. Réagir warns that it is still possible to correct this course, calling for the urgent establishment of an autonomous national committee to manage the dialogue and for the official publication of the terms of reference for these meetings. According to this party, these meetings “represent the hope of an entire people.”
