The conference of heads of state of the CEEAC member countries decided on Saturday during a regular meeting in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea to lift the sanctions imposed on Gabon following the coup d’état on August 30th, according to the final communiqué of the meeting in Malabo.
CEEAC has de facto decided to reintegrate Gabon into the community and promised to conduct an international campaign to justify the lifting of these sanctions.
Immediately, the Gabonese government welcomed the decision of the Economic Community of Central African States (CEEAC) to lift the sanctions against Gabon and reintegrate the country into the community, as indicated in a statement read by the Gabonese Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regis Onanga Ndiaye.
“The Gabonese government welcomes these decisions and expresses its sincere thanks to the heads of state and government of CEEAC,” the statement said.
CEEAC had sanctioned Gabon following the coup d’état on August 30th, which toppled the regime of President Ali Bongo Ondimba on the night of the announcement of his reelection for a 3rd term after 14 years in power.
Subsequently, the regional integration institution had decided to temporarily relocate its headquarters from Libreville to Malabo.
The popular support of the Gabonese people for the coup d’état and the publication of the transition timetable, which was expected to last 24 months, led to the lifting of these sanctions, according to the final communiqué of the meeting in Malabo.
