After a general assembly on February 23, the National Syndicate of Magistrates of Gabon (Synamag) decided to give the President of the Transition an additional month to sign the implementing texts related to the law on the Status of Magistrates. Synamag will meet again in early April to decide whether or not to end the strike that began in December 2022 and stated that they have participated in the drafting of these texts that are now on Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema’s table.

In Gabon, during a general assembly held on February 23, the National Syndicate of Magistrates of Gabon (Synamag) unanimously decided to give the President of the Transition, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, a one-month grace period to sign the implementing texts related to the new law governing the Status of Magistrates. This decision marks a key step in the dialogue between the union and the administration, with a reassessment planned for early April 2024 to decide whether to continue the strike initiated in December 2022. Synamag, having contributed to the drafting of these texts, emphasizes their crucial importance for the profession.

Since December 2022, the Gabonese judiciary has been in a strike, as recalled by the President of Synamag after the general assembly. A temporary suspension of the movement had been granted in September 2023, following a request from the President of the Transition, who is also the President of the Superior Council of the Judiciary, for a period of three months. Five months later, the impatience of the magistrates grows in the face of the lack of implementation of the essential implementing texts for the application of their new status.

The Ministry of Justice recently stated that these documents had been submitted to the President of the Transition. The President of Synamag, Germain Nguema Ella, explains that following the promulgation of the new Status of Magistrates, the union actively participated in the drafting of the implementing texts now in the hands of the Head of State. “The objective of this extraordinary general assembly was to clearly communicate to our members the current state of negotiations with government authorities,” he said.

After intense but constructive discussions, the union members rallied behind the promise made by Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, who had assured: “I will sign your texts as soon as they are on my table“. Confident in the President’s commitment to Gabonese justice, Synamag unanimously decided to give him an additional deadline. “Waiting for prompt action from the authorities, our next general assembly, scheduled for early April, will determine whether the strike will be maintained or lifted,” concluded Germain Nguema Ella, thereby granting an additional month to President Oligui Nguema to finalize the long-awaited texts.
