No Gabonese club will play in an African competition in 2025, according to the new schedule for the resumption of the national championship announced on Friday to club presidents by the Minister of Sports, André Jacques Augand.
According to the new schedule, the championship was supposed to resume on April 20th and end in August. However, clubs that are supposed to participate in African competitions such as the CAF Confederation Cup and the African Champions League must be known between June and July.
“The championship will be played over five months and will start no later than April 20, 2024, but without taking into account the CAF deadlines because Gabon will not register any clubs in African competitions,” said President Alaba Fall, president of AO CMS, after the meeting with the minister.
Gabon will still be in competition when the list of qualified clubs is closed at the level of the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
It should be noted that on February 22nd, the Minister of Sports had convened male and female football clubs to announce the resumption of the national football championship on March 30th. Unfortunately, due to logistical and financial reasons, this did not happen.
The Gabonese football championship is fully funded by the state. This is why the competition stops and suspensions occur whenever the state is late in payment.
This year, the state has allocated a subsidy of 2.2 billion CFA francs for the National Football League (LINAF) and 1.4 billion CFA francs for the National Women’s Football League (LINAFFEM).
