In order to commemorate the day of August 30, 2023 marking the fall of the Bongo regime in Gabon, the military in power are considering erecting a monument in Libreville called the Liberation Monument. Artists in the field are invited to submit their ideas.

Six months after taking power in Gabon, the military are determined to leave their mark and make their presence known. In memory of the coup that overthrew Ali Bongo on August 30, 2023, an artwork called the “Monument of Liberation” is in the process of being erected in Libreville. The exact location is yet to be determined.

Furthermore, a call for expressions of interest has been launched by the Ministry of Culture and Arts for the design and realization of the monument. Proposals from artists, in paper and digital (3D) model formats, are expected by Friday, March 8 at 3:30 pm at the office of Dr. André Jacques Augand. The artwork is expected to be inaugurated during the first edition of the National Liberation Day on August 30, 2024.

On January 22, the Council of Ministers adopted a decree establishing a National Liberation Day in the Republic of Gabon. The objective, according to authorities, is to “commemorate the liberation of the Gabonese people on August 30, 2023” across the entire national territory.
