With the mission of promoting sustainable democracy around the world, the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA) aims to support the political transition in Gabon. A delegation from this intergovernmental organization, composed of member states from all continents, was received on February 26 by the head of government, Raymond Ndong Sima.
Following the coup that overthrew the regime of Ali Bongo, the new strongman of Libreville and all members of the Committee expressed their ambition to restore the country’s institutions. The International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA) therefore presents itself as an ideal partner for this process. In this sense, one of its delegations, led by the former UNDP representative in Gabon, Bintou Djibo, held discussions on February 26 with the Prime Minister of the Transition, Raymond Ndong Sima. IDEA aims to help improve the design of strong institutions and key democratic processes, especially during this period of upheaval.
The institution is offering technical support to Gabon in the framework of the transition process that began on the evening of August 30, 2024.
The meeting between the head of government and the International IDEA delegation allowed both parties to discuss the next steps in the transition process and the challenges to be overcome. This collaboration appears promising and aims to provide technical and institutional support to the country’s authorities for a successful completion of the transition.
Gabon is currently finalizing its upcoming National Dialogue, which will bring together all segments of the population to redefine the country’s direction and lay the foundations for a new Republic.
Based on the efforts and actions taken since the events of August 30, Bintou Djibo expressed her optimism, noting “the significant progress made so far” and the involvement of the Gabonese population without distinction.
IDEA has also committed to providing technical assistance in various areas, including this inclusive dialogue and the drafting of a new Constitution. Drawing on its experience and commitment to promoting democracy worldwide, IDEA also aims to put its resources at the service of Gabon.
Raymond Ndong Sima emphasized the importance of international cooperation in the transition process and thanked IDEA for its support.
This meeting demonstrates the commitment of the Transition authorities to work closely with international partners to ensure the success of the ongoing democratic process in our country.
With the presence of IDEA representatives in Gabon, following the United States Agency for International Development (Usaid) and the National Democratic Institute (NDI), among others, it is clear that support for the country in the context of the Transition is growing.
