Overthrown on August 30, 2023, following tensions that led to a coup d’état, the former ruling party, the Gabonese Democratic Party (PDG), wants to give itself a new lease on life. Around the interim secretary general, Luc Oyoubi, his hierarchs who remained loyal despite the cascade of resignations are currently organizing the Self-criticism and Refoundation Conference. They want to reflect on the journey of their political stable and renew their commitment to improve this party.

“Excluded from state affairs management” for more than 5 months, the Gabonese Democratic Party (PDG) wants to revive. In order to achieve this and in anticipation of the first “March 12” that this party will commemorate, undoubtedly, without its Distinguished-Comrade president, the Executive Secretariat is organizing the Self-criticism and Refoundation Conference from February 23 to 24. A political meeting aimed at self-criticism, considering perspectives and above all renewing commitments for the good functioning of this structure. Inevitably, future political and electoral deadlines are looming, despite the scandals that led to its downfall.

With the final loop scheduled for March 12, 2024 at the Botanical Garden, the Self-criticism and Refoundation Conference of the PDG aims to “identify past mistakes that led to the change of regime and propose solutions for the future”.

The Executive Secretariat, which is organizing these meetings, indicates that these encounters will allow the PDG to “participate optimally in the Transition, properly prepare for the upcoming elections and remain an important political force on the national scene”.

The former ruling party created by Omar Bongo is indeed facing a wave of resignations and defections. Each one putting forward their arguments, critiquing, rejecting, and denouncing the mistakes of the previous management, to justify their defection.

The Self-criticism and Refoundation Conference therefore concerns all party members. They are called to participate, first in their federation, in the analysis of avenues for improving the functioning of this group that led Gabon for over 50 years, so that “past mistakes are not repeated”.

The agenda of this grand meeting of the PDG, which survived August 30, 2023, will focus on the analysis of all the instances of this political organization, from the Distinguished-Comrade president, the central executive, the Permanent Committee of the Political Bureau to the management of the election, the party’s text deficiencies, campaign financing, transparency of the party’s finances, and the selection of party candidates.

The final report containing all the conclusions of this meeting will be validated on March 12, the anniversary date of the PDG, at the Botanical Garden in Libreville. This will undoubtedly be an opportunity to see if the party of the masses still maintains its nickname in light of the defections.
