In search of visibility or positions for some when others seem convinced of the need to support the new authorities in order to improve the well-being of the population, several former deputies mainly from the former majority have committed on Monday around a memorandum to support the actions of the military in power.
They are mostly from political parties that constituted the former majority in power ousted by the coup of August 30, 2023. Several dozen former deputies of the 13th legislature signed a memorandum on Monday, March 4 in Libreville, in which they commit to promote and support the projects and actions of the Committee for the Transition and the Restoration of Institutions (CTRI). Supposed to represent the 9 provinces of Gabon, these former elected officials intend to intervene within the framework of a brand new structure called “Awakening 241” supposed to “ensure monitoring and support” of the initiatives of the military in power.
If they have undertaken to create this so-called republican platform bringing together patriots, it is because “the current context, which does not require ideological obligations, namely majority and opposition,” required them to do so, explains Julien-Florent Assoumou Akue. The former elected representative of the Center of Liberal Reformers (CLR) in the 6th district of Libreville and his companions therefore intend to seize this opportunity to contribute their share to the building.
“Awakening 241,” according to its members, is also a platform for reflection on the future of Gabon and the improvement of the well-being of the Gabonese people. Some present it as a means of reappropriation of the country by its sons and daughters aware of the current challenges. Unless it is actually a new way for others to make themselves seen by the new authorities in order to benefit from positions within the public administration or elsewhere.
