The Wise and Dignitaries of the Nation, reading the trajectory that the Committee for Transition and Restoration of Institutions (CTRI) is taking in the current management of the country, believe that there are things to reconsider. They cite, for example, the return of certain personalities from the Gabonese Democratic Party (PDG) to the circle of power, as well as their possible participation in the upcoming National Dialogue. They made this known on March 12, calling on the authorities of the country to postpone these National Consultations and to “put an end to the agitation of the PDG and its satellites.”

The actions and acts of the Committee for Transition and Restoration of Institutions (CTRI), the return of the Gabonese Democratic Party (PDG) to the political scene, and the organization of the Inclusive Political Dialogue were the main points of a declaration made on March 13 by the Sages and Dignitaries of the Republic, whose voice is carried by Eugène Revangue. Having advocated for a political and peaceful transition, they do not hide their dismay today regarding the direction it is taking, particularly emphasizing the strong return of the former ruling party and the organization of the upcoming National Consultations.

“The justice must no longer be selective”

The Sages and Dignitaries of the Republic immediately make it known that they do not want to hide from the Gabonese people their “immense dismay regarding the direction today’s Transition is taking.” Speaking about the duration of these National Consultations and beyond the Transition, they believe it will be agreed upon by the Gabonese people alone “who do not intend to be subject to any external agenda.” “Due to the sovereign nature of these national consultations, all acts and resolutions taken by the Gabonese people, in conclave, must be the subject of texts and laws with binding, enforceable and opposable nature to all citizens,” emphasized the spokesperson for the Collective, adding that “after the adoption of the revised Charter, the Consultations will decide to immediately establish a truth-justice-reparation-reconciliation commission, which will concurrently start its work to hear all those who have created this disastrous situation in the country before they may be potentially rehabilitated.”

For the group led by Eugène Revangue, “justice must no longer be selective.” “It is not only the personalities currently in detention who must be accountable. Everyone, including the others, must also be held accountable,” they insisted.

The Sages and Dignitaries of the Nation feel disillusioned. “Unfortunately, we observe with bitter regret that the Transition led by the CTRI is moving further away from the paths laid out.” Fulfilling their role, they sound the alarm, calling on the Transition authorities to “rethink to avoid another and desperate disappointment of the Gabonese people.” “It’s not too late to do things right,” noted Eugène Revangue.

“An insult to the intelligence and dignity of other Gabonese”

They blame the CTRI for putting an end to the “Bongo-PDG system,” but adopting the same behaviors, now with them are the members, the most criticized, who feel immune. “As evidence,” declared the spokesperson, “the surprising and unexpected return of the cream of the Gabonese Democratic Party; this party that contributed significantly to Gabon’s descent into chaos from March 12 to August 30, 2023. On closer inspection and in other contexts, these compatriots who plunged Gabon into this chaotic situation should, at best, be in the hands of justice to answer for their disastrous management.”

They believe that all those responsible for the country’s past management are accountable and potentially liable and should not attend the National Consultations. “Their presence would be an insult to the intelligence and dignity of other Gabonese,” denounced the Sages and Dignitaries of the Nation.

Regarding the upcoming April Consultations, which, in their view, are being organized opaquely, they suggest, for better organization, “postponing these Consultations which would involve all stakeholders through the establishment of a more inclusive National Preparatory Committee responsible for improving the work.”

“Let us take the time to do things right. Let us hasten slowly. It is better to prepare well for the National Consultations to succeed rather than have an improvised and rushed Dialogue that would plunge the country into the abyss,” proposed the spokesperson for the Wise and Dignitaries.
