Convinced of the importance of the National Council for Democracy (CND) in the context of restoring institutions, on Wednesday, March 13, its president strongly criticized its detractors whom he accuses of attempting to make disappear an organ that was created with the will of the Gabonese people.

Hands off the CND! Despite being in turmoil, Me Séraphin Ndaot Rembogo does not intend to let his precious institution be torn away from him. He asserts that it is useful for the political life of Gabon. At a substitutive general assembly with representatives of legally recognized parties in the country on Wednesday, the president of the National Democracy Council responded to the criticisms directed against him and the structure he has led since his appointment by presidential decree seven years ago. He stated that he is the victim of a campaign of “denigration and perfidious humiliation,” but refuses to open himself up to criticism, especially since, according to him, his detractors have a single project: the dissolution of the CND.

Leading a crusade for “the preservation of the image of the common house of political parties in Gabon,” the leader of the Party for Development and Social Solidarity (PDS) does not intend to let them succeed in this nefarious project and is determined to defend this institution that many believe “serves no purpose.” However, he reminds that the creation of this body was approved by referendum following the Paris Accords in 1994. Therefore, it is an institution wanted by the people which still has its place today, particularly in the context of the transition opened following the coup d’état of August 30, 2023.

And while he is willing to admit that “ousted leaders refused to implement its recommendations and significantly reduced its operating resources,” Me Ndaot Rembogo is convinced that it will be different with the Committee for Transition and Institutional Restoration (CTRI). The CND will emerge from the Inclusive National Dialogue better structured, more organized, and therefore perfectly in line with the expectations of politicians. This is, in any case, the wish of its president. In the meantime, the institution still does not have an office to properly carry out its work. The president is the only one listed on the organizational chart.
