Less than 24 hours after the appointment of vice-presidents and secretaries general of the former ruling party, the Gabonese Democratic Party (PDG), these personalities were installed in their roles on March 8 in Libreville. The spotlight was on the new Secretary General, Angélique Ngoma. She succeeded the former interim leader, Luc Oyoubi, and knows that “the task is immense.” Hence her call to the militants: “It is up to us to make our political party what we want it to be.”

The handover at the General Secretariat of the Gabonese Democratic Party (PDG) took place on March 8, less than 24 hours after the appointment of vice-presidents and secretaries general of this former ruling party. During a ceremony at the PDG headquarters, the first vice-president, Paul Biyoghé Mba, installed the new Secretary General of this 56-year-old political party into her role.

The promptness with which the new leaders of the PDG are trying to regain control of the party after the uncertainties following the advent of the Committee for the Transition and Restoration of Institutions (CTRI) demonstrates, according to activists, their desire to play a leading role again on the national political scene. In this spirit, succeeding Luc Oyoubi who held the interim position for the past 6 months and despite differences, the new Secretary General, Angélique Ngoma, declared: “It is up to us to make our political party what we want it to be.”

For Paul Biyoghé Mba, this ceremony was part of the process of reviving the PDG. “We must consider ourselves as links in the same chain,” he said, emphasizing the need for a re-foundation. The former Prime Minister intends to eliminate improvisations, amateurism, and other elements that have hindered the effectiveness of their political party. “The ball is in our court,” he stated, noting that “in reality, there should be no disconnect between PDG militants and the Gabonese people.”

At the helm of the General Secretariat, the promoted leader acknowledges from the start that “the task is immense.” “We, the secretaries general and I, are aware of the work that awaits us. But we know with confidence that we are not alone because the militants of yesterday, today, and tomorrow will always be there to support the work started almost 56 years ago,” she stated.

Angélique Ngoma also points out that “August 30, 2023 was an important moment of questioning” regarding their membership in this political party. In this vein, she observes that “we must keep a low profile, engage in self-criticism.” According to the newly promoted leader, it is through their individual and collective commitment that they will be strong.

The former interim Secretary General reflected on his 6 months leading the party. He recounted his difficulties, noting that only a few courageous people were willing to return to the PDG headquarters. Furthermore, Luc Oyoubi mentioned that the party had run out of funds to meet its expenses during that period. Nevertheless, they did what needed to be done, organizing several working sessions, preparing proposals for the National Dialogue, as well as the Self-Criticism and Refoundation Conference and the upcoming celebration of the Party’s anniversary. He expressed satisfaction with the actions taken at the helm of his political party.
