Move or the party dies! This could summarize, in one sentence, the declaration of Alain-Claude Bilie-By-Nze. Indeed, it is a real cry of alarm that he made through a lucid declaration calling, on his Facebook page on March 3, to take the bull by the horns. The former Prime Minister of Ali Bongo, ousted from power during the military coup on August 30, 2023, draws an implacable assessment of the situation of the Gabonese Democratic Party (PDG), a political party that has ruled the country since 1968.

“The failure of the first phase of the Self-Criticism and Refoundation Assizes, convened without prior consultation with the deliberative bodies, confirms the deep crisis threatening the PDG structure,” according to Alain-Claude Bilie-By-Nze. © D.R.

According to Bilie-By-Nze, the PDG is currently going through the “most serious crisis in its history”. The reason? “The actual inability for comrade President Ali Bongo to guide and drive any action within the party” since his removal from power. This paralysis is compounded by “the vacancy of the position of Secretary General of the PDG“, leaving the party in a state of disintegration.

Believing that his party, “with its 56 years of existence, is made up of men and women of quality and great experience, who have been able to overcome very difficult situations in the past. [And] their contribution must be sought with humility, just as it is appropriate to request the contribution of all executives willing to get involved”, Bilie-By-Nze calls for the implementation of a “political solution of wisdom and unity”, starting with the immediate convening, “before March 12th”, of an extraordinary joint session of the Political Bureau and the Advisory Council of Sages. Objective: to officially acknowledge the vacancy at the helm of the party and decide on the necessary structural reforms for the recovery of the PDG.

The extraordinary congress, the only way to stable and legitimate structures

While he believes that it is “time to free speech so that grassroots militants, without whom the Party would not exist, can express themselves on the root causes that have undermined the PDG until the loss of power”, the former Prime Minister thus proposes the urgent formation of an “ad-hoc directorate” to handle current affairs. And the rapid organization of an extraordinary congress, the only way to provide the PDG with “stable and legitimate structures” to help it overcome the trauma of the coup and the sudden loss of power.

Bilie-By-Nze insists: “To refuse these reforms would be to consign the death of the PDG, which would be an overwhelming historical responsibility.” And he warns: “We must proceed with a lucid inventory and face the errors and deviations that have led to this tragedy.” Even if it means challenging some “untouchables” from the inner circle.

Through this shocking declaration, the former Prime Minister clearly intends to force the hands of the party barons, at the risk of being accused by some of political maneuvering. But after all, who better than him (known as a shrewd tactician) can analyze the secret mechanisms of the PDG and offer salutary advice to save it from implosion?
