4,565 out of 6,206 admitted to the entrance exam for the Gabonese national police were flagged and then rejected for false birth certificate, false diploma, or impersonation of Gabonese nationality, states a statement from the High Command of the police published Monday evening in Libreville.

Some other candidates were rejected for a criminal record or behavior incompatible with police duty.

Only 1,642 files were admissible out of a total of 6,206 admitted to this exam, which took place throughout the Gabonese territory on September 9, 2023. In total, 17,771 Gabonese participated in this exam, the results of which were published last weekend and sparked a strong contestation.

The rejected candidates suspect a possible manipulation of the results. According to them, black hands at all levels would have sidelined the candidates who took the exam in favor of others who may not have even participated in a test.

In videos posted on social media, some rejected candidates point out the presence among the admitted candidates of those declared unfit during the sports tests. Others discover duplications. Calls for mobilization are rising to contest these results.

In its statement, the police specifies that initially the exam was supposed to allow the recruitment of 1,100 police officers, including 100 officers and 1,000 agents.

Facing the influx of applications, the police adds, the President of the transition, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, concerned with providing employment for Gabonese citizens, instructed the national police forces to ultimately recruit 3,000 police officers.

The lists published this weekend specify that 2,532 candidates were declared admitted, with 1,328 in the sub-officer category and 1,204 for the future officers. There would be 468 new admits missing.

“To fill this gap, the High Command decided to rescue some candidates based on the grades obtained after the written tests. This process is ongoing to constitute the 3rd contingent,” the statement says.

“The rescued candidates will also be subject to moral inquiry and medical examinations,” the police warned.

“Calls for protests launched on social media to contest the exam results could constitute a disturbance to public order and the authors will be prosecuted in accordance with the laws in force,” the police cautioned.
