The city of Freetown in Sierra Leone is facing a significant challenge with the rise of KUSH, a life-threatening menace that is affecting the youth population. The Mayor of Freetown, Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr, has called for urgent action from the relevant authorities to combat this crisis and protect the future of the city’s youth. In addition to the fight against KUSH, the Freetown City Council has embarked on a new project to improve transportation in the city. The Freetown Cable Car project has been in development for the past two years, with feasibility studies funded by the C40 Cities Finance Facility and conducted by an international consortium of experts led by GIZ. The preliminary results of the feasibility studies were presented at the inaugural Project Steering Committee meeting, attended by government officials and key stakeholders.
Mayor Aki-Sawyerr expressed satisfaction with the progress of the Cable Car project, noting that the system is expected to be both technically and financially feasible. She emphasized the importance of engaging with potential private sector and grant funders to advance the implementation of the Freetown Cable Car system. The project is seen as a crucial step towards improving transportation and infrastructure in Freetown, ultimately benefitting its residents and visitors.
In light of International Zero Waste Day, Mayor Aki-Sawyerr also highlighted the city’s efforts in solid and liquid waste management during a recent interview on AYV TV. She discussed the challenges faced by the city, as well as the opportunities for improvement through new sanitation bylaws, enhanced waste collection services, and recycling partnerships. The Mayor emphasized the responsibility of all Freetonians to contribute to keeping the city clean and sustainable for future generations.
