Kenya: FKF Women Cup: Holders Ulinzi draw little-known TUK Ravens

Defending champions Ulinzi Starlets will be starting their campaign in the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Women’s Cup against County League side TUK Ravens in the Round of 16. The draw for the 2023/24 FKF Women’s Cup took place at the Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE) in Nairobi and the tournament is scheduled to commence on April 6-7.

A total of 22 teams will be competing for the domestic cup this season, including eight from the Premier League, four from the second tier league, six from Division One, and four regional and county clubs.

Twelve teams, including Nairobi Starlets, Royal Starlets, TUK Ravens, Ulinzi Starlets, Milima Queens, Gaspo Women, NYS Queens, Nakuru City Queens, Makolanders Women, KISPED Queens, Embu Queens, and Kenya Police Bullets will feature in the preliminary round. The winners of the preliminary matches will join 10 other teams in the Round of 16.

Ulinzi Starlets have won the domestic cup twice since its inception. In the 2022/23 tournament, they secured their second consecutive title with a 3-1 victory over Nakuru City Queens at Nyayo Stadium in Nairobi on June 4 last year. Ulinzi coach Joseph Wambua expressed their readiness to defend their title, stating that the squad remains unchanged from the previous championship-winning team, with the exception of four players who are continuing their military training.

Kenya Police Bullets coach Beldine Odemba emphasized the importance of lower-league players showcasing their skills and gaining recognition through competitions like the FKF Women’s Cup. Kispeed Queens CEO Leakey Ochieng’ also expressed confidence in their team’s preparations for the competition.

The draw for the Round of 16 matches was also revealed, with exciting fixtures set to take place between various teams in the competition.
