The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has announced that Finidi George will be leading the Super Eagles when they face Ghana’s Black Stars in a friendly match in Marrakech, Morocco on Friday. George, who served as an assistant coach under the now departed Jose Peseiro, recently took over as the head coach for the upcoming matches against Ghana and Mali.
A former player for Ajax Amsterdam and Real Betis, George made his debut for the Nigerian national team in 1991 and played a significant role in the team’s success, including assisting Rashidi Yekini in scoring Nigeria’s first-ever FIFA World Cup goal in 1994. He also scored the crucial goal that secured Nigeria’s spot in their first FIFA World Cup finals in 1993.
Hailing from a family of football stars, George will now be giving instructions from the touchline as the head coach, following his time as an understudy to Peseiro. The NFF has confirmed that 12 out of the 22 players expected for the matches have already arrived in Marrakech, with a few players including Osimhen and Awoniyi ruled out due to injuries.
The team currently in Marrakech includes goalkeepers, defenders, midfielders, and forwards, all gearing up for the upcoming matches. The remaining players, including Uzoho, Awaziem, Onyeka, Ndidi, and Iheanacho, are expected to join the team soon. Bright Osayi-Samuel is the only player who will arrive later today.
Following the match against Ghana on Friday, the Super Eagles will face the Les Aigles of Mali at the same Grand Stade de Marrakech on March 26. The team is focused on preparing for these important fixtures and is looking forward to showcasing their skills on the field.
Overall, George’s appointment as head coach for the upcoming matches reflects the NFF’s confidence in his abilities and experience. With a strong lineup of players and support staff, the Super Eagles are ready to compete against tough opponents and continue their journey towards success in international football.
