The Federal Government is currently in the process of developing a template that will allow various ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) in the country to exchange data seamlessly. This initiative aims to establish the Nigerian Data Stack, which will serve as a framework for the use of technology in government and provide a single portal for accessing all government services. Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, announced these plans during a live television program.
Dr. Tijani emphasized the importance of data exchange among different government entities to improve the efficiency of service delivery. With the support of the World Bank, the Nigerian Data Stack is expected to be ready within the next six to eight months. This framework will pave the way for enhanced technological capabilities within the government and enable easier access to government services through a centralized platform.
In addition to the development of the Nigerian Data Stack, the Ministry of Communications is also gearing up to launch a fund that will enable the laying of fiber optic cables across the country. This infrastructure investment aims to improve internet connectivity nationwide, thereby enhancing the quality of internet services and reducing costs for consumers. Dr. Tijani highlighted the importance of digital infrastructure investment in alignment with President Tinubu’s vision for technological advancements in Nigeria.
Furthermore, the Ministry is organizing the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy Workshop, scheduled to take place in Abuja in April 2024. The workshop will bring together leading technology companies such as Google, Meta, and Deep Mind to discuss the application of artificial intelligence in various sectors. The outcomes of the workshop will inform the government’s strategy for harnessing AI to improve lives and stimulate economic growth.
Dr. Tijani emphasized the potential of AI to address complex challenges in education, agriculture, healthcare, and other critical areas. He underscored the importance of engaging Nigerian talent in the field of AI to drive innovation and progress in the country. Through initiatives like the National Artificial Intelligence Research Scheme (NAIRS) and the Fourth Industrial Revolution Technology Application (4IRTA) project, the Ministry has been collaborating with researchers and entrepreneurs to mainstream AI applications in everyday life.
As Nigeria transitions into the era of artificial intelligence, Dr. Tijani stressed the importance of managing the technology responsibly. Despite concerns over issues like deep fakes, he expressed confidence in Nigeria’s ability to leverage AI for economic growth and job creation. While the West may fear job losses due to AI, Dr. Tijani believes that Nigeria and other African countries stand to benefit from increased productivity and job opportunities through the adoption of artificial intelligence technologies.
