The Federal Government announced that they will hold a special reception for the Super Eagles in Abuja following their participation in the Africa Cup of Nations, where they will be rewarded for their efforts. After defeating South Africa 4-2 on penalties in the first semifinal match of the tournament, Vice President Kashim Shettima, along with other officials, spoke to the players in the dressing room to express pride and appreciation for their accomplishment. The government assured the team of a grand reception upon their return from the championship.
However, the Super Eagles’ Manager, Jose Peseiro, expressed uncertainty about the fitness of Porto defender, Zaidu Sanusi, for the final match against Cote d’Ivoire on Sunday. Zaidu had missed the semifinal due to an injury sustained in the quarterfinal against Angola. Peseiro also mentioned that striker Osimhen was suffering from stomach problems and was unsure of Zaidu’s recovery for the final match.
In addition, there were reports of a potential rift between Peseiro and Kelechi Iheanacho, who scored the winning penalty in the shootout against South Africa. Iheanacho did not attend a pre-match press conference, and there were speculations about his absence from matches. However, Peseiro stated that Iheanacho’s absence was due to recovering from an injury and not because of any conflict.
The team’s efforts were recognized by the government, and a befitting reception has been promised for their return. The Super Eagles are set to play in the final match against hosts Cote d’Ivoire, but there are concerns about the fitness of injured players. Despite uncertainties, the government and officials have shown support and appreciation for the team’s achievements at the Africa Cup of Nations tournament.
