The Custodian Classic, taking place at the Lakowe Lakes Golf Club in Lagos, has attracted some of West Africa’s biggest golf stars for its second edition. The tournament started today and will end on Friday, showcasing the talent and skill of top players in the region.
One of the standout players competing in the event is Francis Epe, the current order of Merit leader for the PGA (Professional Golfers’ Association) of Nigeria. Epe, who is based in Ikoyi, made the decision to withdraw from a major engagement in Gabon in order to participate in the Custodian Classic. He expressed that the PGD Tour events are highly respected and challenging, making them a top choice for players like himself.
Epe has already tasted success on the PGD Tour, winning three events and currently leading the season after his victory at The Meristem Open. Despite never having won the Custodian Classic before, Epe sees it as a major goal and is determined to put in his best effort to claim the title this year.
In a statement, Epe mentioned, “I am practicing rigorously and maintaining my form for the event. I am aware of the tough competition due to the high level of players who have registered, but I will stay focused and aim to add this title to my list of victories.”
Femi Olagbenro, the Commissioner of the PGD Tour, highlighted the significant turnout of top players from Nigeria and Ghana for the Custodian Classic, showcasing the talent that exists in these two countries. Notable names such as Olapade Sunday, Gift Willy, and Mike Ubi from Nigeria, and Kojo Barnie, Emos Korblah, and Barry Yaw from Ghana, are all set to compete in the event. Additionally, players from Cote d’Ivoire and Cameroon have also entered, emphasizing the Tour’s growing popularity and acceptance across the continent.
The Custodian Classic promises to be an exciting and competitive event, with players from different countries vying for the prestigious title. The tournament serves as a platform for golfers to showcase their skills and demonstrate their prowess on the course. With a strong field of competitors and the determination of players like Francis Epe, the event is set to be a thrilling showcase of top-tier golf in West Africa.
As the action unfolds over the next few days at the Lakowe Lakes Golf Club, spectators can expect to witness some intense competition, thrilling moments, and exceptional golf from the best players in the region. The Custodian Classic is not just a tournament but a celebration of the sport and the talent that exists within the West African golfing community.
