The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) recently launched the ‘Feed the Future Ethiopia Highlands Resilience Activity’, a $60 million initiative aimed at supporting vulnerable households in Ethiopia. The program is designed to connect 120,000 households to markets and financial resources to enhance their livelihoods and improve food security.
Many of the beneficiaries of this program are graduates of the Ethiopia Productive Safety Net Program (PSNP), a large-scale food security and social welfare initiative that was established in 2005 with support from the US government. The Highlands Resilience Activity, which will be led by Mercy Corps, will operate in six regions of Ethiopia: Amhara, Tigray, Oromia, Sidama, South, and Central Ethiopia. In addition to Mercy Corps, the program will receive support from five local NGOs and two technical partners.
According to a statement from the US embassy in Addis Abeba, the goal of the Highlands Resilience Activity is to help households withstand unexpected setbacks, achieve food security, and ultimately become independent from support programs. The program aims to provide families with various opportunities to earn a living, engage in trade, and access financial assistance.
The program will be implemented in 36 woredas where the PSNP is already in operation. By combining efforts with the PSNP, the Highlands Resilience Activity aims to reduce extreme poverty and build resilience among extremely poor and vulnerable rural households. The ultimate goal is to empower these households to overcome challenges and improve their overall well-being.
In 2021, international partners launched an additional $2.2 billion investment to support nine million people each year under the PSNP. This additional funding will complement the efforts of the Highlands Resilience Activity and further support vulnerable households in Ethiopia.
Overall, the launch of the ‘Feed the Future Ethiopia Highlands Resilience Activity’ represents a significant investment in the economic growth and resilience of vulnerable households in Ethiopia. Through this program, USAID aims to empower households to achieve food security, financial independence, and overall well-being. The collaboration between international partners, local NGOs, and technical partners underscores the collective effort to address poverty and build resilience among vulnerable populations in Ethiopia.
