The Joint Security and Intelligence Task Force recently made a significant announcement regarding the apprehension of 50 individuals suspected of being part of a covert group planning acts of terror and violence in Addis Abeba, the capital city of Ethiopia, and its surrounding areas. This group was allegedly planning to create chaos and violence in the Oromia region after their initial efforts to do so in the Amhara region were thwarted by the combined efforts of regional and federal security forces.
The clandestine group was believed to be operating from bases in Addis Abeba and Menjar Shenkora in the North Shoa zone of the Amhara region. According to reports, they had set up a special armed force in these locations and had allegedly been collaborating with certain followers of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, using church premises as a center for their covert activities.
After five months of surveillance, the task force conducted a secretive operation that resulted in the arrest of the suspects. The apprehended individuals were found in possession of various weapons, snipers, bombs, incendiary materials, currency from different countries, bank books, and assorted documents. Among the detainees, Nigatu Gebreyesus, also known as Abraham, was identified as the leader of the group, while Fasil Getachew and Tewolde Birhan served as the group’s finance, logistics, and resource mobilization officers.
Additionally, the task force revealed that Dawit Woldegiorgis, a former military personnel, and media personalities Habtamu Ayalew and Mesay Mekonnen were identified as coordinators of the covert group. They were reportedly based in foreign countries and had established connections with an armed group led by former opposition party leader Eskindir Nega. The statement also mentioned that Wendosen Aseffa (PhD), assistant professor Sisay Awugechew, and Yordanos Aleme, who had been imprisoned since August 2023, had previously been leading the group.
In light of these developments, the task force urged residents to cooperate with security forces in identifying and reporting suspicious individuals. They also cautioned religious institutions to be vigilant and address any non-religious activities taking place on their premises.
This operation highlights the ongoing efforts of Ethiopian security forces to combat terrorism and maintain peace and stability in the region. By working together and remaining vigilant, both authorities and the public can help prevent acts of violence and uphold the security of the country.
