The Gambela regional government has recently made headlines after announcing the dismissal of several senior officials from their respective positions. This decision, as stated by the government, was justified by the officials’ alleged failure to adequately fulfill their responsibilities amidst the region’s escalating security challenges.

The officials who have been relieved of their duties include Akwai Ubuti, who served as the chief of the regional justice bureau; Chol Kun, who held the position of head of the peace and security administration bureau; Bitew Dak, director-general of the Gambella rural roads authority; and Bugne Nyel, head of the Nuer Ethnic Zone Prosperity Party Office.

The decision to remove these officials was prompted by a series of security incidents in the Gambela region, including ethnic conflicts, acts of terrorism, serious criminal activities, and illicit arms trafficking. The regional government has issued warnings against individuals attempting to seize power through coercive means and has attributed the violence and instability to leadership deficiencies and unaccountable social media entities abroad.

The government’s commitment to tackling security challenges was reiterated in a recent statement, emphasizing the ongoing measures against officials who have failed to fulfill their responsibilities. Addis Standard has been documenting the violence and instability in the region caused by armed group attacks, including incidents resulting in fatalities and injuries.

One such incident involved an armed assault on a bus traveling from Gambella city to Lare district, resulting in casualties. Disturbances in Itang Special District and Gambella City in May 2023 led to fatalities and injuries, while an armed attack on public buses in July 2023 resulted in additional casualties and injuries.

A report by the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission disclosed that conflicts between communities and attacks on refugees in the Gambella region since May 2023 have resulted in numerous fatalities and injuries. The regional government’s ongoing efforts to address these challenges have led to the dismissal of officials who are deemed responsible for the escalating security situation.

The region continues to grapple with security concerns, and the government remains committed to taking decisive action to restore peace and stability. The dismissal of senior officials is part of this larger effort to address the root causes of the violence and insecurity plaguing the Gambela region.
