Addis Abeba – Boro Democratic Party (BDP) has raised concerns over a rise in criminal activities targeting civilians in various parts of the Benishangul-Gumuz region. In a statement released on March 12, 2024, the party highlighted a worrying trend of “gang robberies, kidnappings, child abductions, and murders” that have occurred over the past six months. The party also expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of prosecution or accountability for the perpetrators of these crimes.

The statement from the BDP specifically mentioned several incidents, including the shooting deaths of a senior police officer and a college student in Gilgel Beles town, as well as the killings of a senior lawyer and a legal advisor in Pawe special district. Additionally, a businessman was reportedly killed in a violent manner in Wenbera district. The party emphasized the case of Tigist Tilahun, who was allegedly abducted near Assosa city and brutally murdered, with her body found on a river bank.

The BDP criticized the failure to arrest suspects in Tigist’s case and expressed concerns for the safety of citizens. They stated, “We believe that there was a chance that Tigist could have survived if the police had handled her case properly.” The party called for the apprehension and prosecution of criminals responsible for the loss of lives in the region and urged for appropriate sentencing for those already in custody.

Furthermore, the BDP raised security concerns related to the activities of armed forces in the Mendera district of the Metekel Zone, warning that it could escalate conflict in the area. The party urged security forces to take necessary precautions and measures to prevent any violence.

The statement also highlighted incidents of killings and injuries caused to civilians and a security member in the Sedal district of Kemashi Zone by armed groups from Sudan, labeling it as a security threat that requires government action.

In conclusion, the BDP emphasized the need for increased security measures to protect the lives and well-being of civilians in the Benishangul-Gumuz region. They called for swift action to address the criminal activities and ensure that justice is served for the victims and their families. The party urged government authorities to take immediate steps to maintain peace and stability in the region.
