A tragic incident occurred in Dara district, located within the North Shewa Zone of the Oromia region, where at least nine individuals lost their lives, and multiple homes were burned down by alleged “Fano militants,” according to reports from local residents.
The attack took place on the morning of March 7, 2024, in Jiru Dada, Woren Gabro, and Manketa Wario kebeles within the Dara district. A resident of Manketa Wario Kebele, who preferred to remain anonymous, shared that nine people died in the assault by the self-proclaimed “Fano militants,” with many others sustaining injuries.
One of the victims was an 11-year-old girl named Shetaye Dubale, who tragically lost her life during the attack. The anonymous resident also mentioned that numerous houses were set on fire during the incident, with the attack still ongoing in Manketa Wario kebele.
Another resident from Woren Gabro Kebele reported similar incidents of loss of life and property destruction in his village. He mentioned that children and elderly individuals who were unable to flee were also abducted during the attack.
In Jiru Deda kebele, homes were destroyed, and more than 400 cattle were stolen. To escape the danger, many sought refuge in a desert area called Abote. This recent incident in Dara district is not an isolated case, as a similar attack was reported in December 2023, resulting in 18 fatalities and six injuries attributed to the “Fano militants.”
Efforts to reach the Dera district administrator, Shimelis Eyalehun, for comment were unsuccessful. The community in Dara district continues to face violence and unrest, with residents living in fear of further attacks by armed groups.
The situation in Dara district highlights the ongoing conflict and insecurity in the region, with innocent civilians bearing the brunt of the violence. Immediate action is needed to address the root causes of the conflict and protect the lives and property of the residents in the area.
As the community in Dara district mourns the loss of their loved ones and struggles to rebuild their homes, there is a pressing need for peace and stability in the region. The international community must also step up efforts to support the affected population and work towards a lasting peace in the region.
