The interim administration of the Tigray region has expressed concerns regarding actions taken by the Amhara regional government that they perceive as an attempt to claim Tigray lands as their own. In a statement issued recently, the Tigray Interim Administration accused the Amhara regional administration of incorporating Tigray lands into their educational curriculum and regional maps, labeling these actions as irresponsible and part of a campaign to disintegrate and destroy Tigray.
The statement also criticized the Amhara regional government for failing to show remorse for the violence and suffering inflicted upon the people of Tigray in areas under their control. The Tigray Interim Administration referred to these actions by the Amhara government as historical mistakes with potentially serious consequences and demanded an immediate correction.
Furthermore, the statement called out the federal government for not taking necessary measures against the actions of the Amhara regional government. The Tigray Interim Administration believes that the Amhara region’s actions are undermining the peace and stability efforts being made by the people of Tigray and the interim administration, particularly in light of the Pretoria agreement.
The interim administration urged the people of the Amhara region and all Ethiopians to stand in solidarity with the people of Tigray and the interim administration to put an end to the violence and abuse allegedly carried out by the Amhara regional government. They warned that failure to heed this call to action would result in the Amhara region being held accountable for the consequences that follow.
The Minister of Defense, Abraham Belay, recently announced the federal government’s strategies to address the situation in western Tigray, which is currently under the control of Amhara forces. He stated that federal forces would maintain authority in these regions to facilitate the repatriation process and allow residents to hold local elections upon their return. This initiative is aimed at laying the groundwork for a referendum to conclusively resolve the territorial dispute.
Overall, the Tigray Interim Administration’s statement highlights the continued tensions and conflicts between the Tigray region and the Amhara regional government, as well as the complexities of the broader political landscape in Ethiopia. The call for solidarity and the warning of consequences underscore the gravity of the situation and the urgent need for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict.
