The Ethiopian Electric Utility (EEU) and Chinese telecom giant Huawei recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Friday, April 12, to provide alternative electricity to communities living in Ethiopia’s off-grid areas. This partnership also includes plans for EV charging stations for electric vehicles, as well as the implementation of sophisticated technologies to improve facility operations.
The MoU was signed at the Green Energy Summit 2024, organized by Huawei Ethiopia under the theme “Together for a Greener Ethiopia” in the capital city of Addis Ababa. This agreement will allow the two parties to establish a strategic partnership focusing on digital transformation, corporate culture, green energy, and management collaboration.
During the event, Liu Jifan, the CEO of Huawei Ethiopia, emphasized the importance of addressing environmental challenges in Africa, including Ethiopia. He highlighted the increasing demand for solar energy solutions due to the instability of the electricity system and rising oil costs on the continent. Huawei is committed to utilizing its power electronics and ICT technology to contribute towards making Ethiopia a more sustainable and environmentally friendly nation.
Tariku Demissie, the Chief Technology Officer at Ethio-telecom, acknowledged Ethiopia’s abundant renewable energy resources, such as solar, wind, geothermal, and hydropower. The Ethiopian government has recognized the potential of these resources and has set ambitious goals for renewable energy generation in the country.
The Green Energy Summit also brought together government officials from Ethiopian Electric Utility, Ethiopian Electric Power, Petroleum and Energy Authority, as well as private sector players. The summit facilitated a “Green Energy Dialogue” session to discuss the challenges and opportunities of EV charging and green energy adoption in Ethiopia. This session provided a platform for knowledge exchange, networking, and collaboration in the green energy, data center facilities, critical power, and EV charging industries.
The overarching goal of the Green Energy Summit is to convene decision-makers from public and private organizations interested in implementing renewable energy solutions in Ethiopia. By fostering collaboration and dialogue among key stakeholders, the summit aims to accelerate the adoption of green energy practices and technologies in the country.
In conclusion, the partnership between the Ethiopian Electric Utility and Huawei represents a significant step towards enhancing access to alternative electricity solutions in off-grid areas of Ethiopia. Through the utilization of innovative technologies and a commitment to sustainability, both parties are poised to contribute to a greener and more environmentally friendly future for the country.
