The Ethiopian Islamic Affairs Supreme Council has expressed serious concerns over a series of violent attacks targeting Muslims in the Amhara regional state in recent times. According to a statement issued by the Council, there have been numerous reported incidents of violence against the Muslim community in the region, including the tragic deaths of four family members and their neighbor in Bahir Dar city.
The attack occurred on April 7, 2024, as the victims were returning home after attending prayers at a local mosque. Gunmen reportedly killed them in a brutal manner, highlighting the growing violence against Muslims in the area. The Council also mentioned a believer who was killed in Mota town, as well as shootings and bombings that have targeted mosques in Gondar city.
The Amhara Regional Islamic Affairs Higher Council released a similar statement, stating that over 80 Muslims have lost their lives, many have been displaced, and incidents of kidnapping and robbery have been reported over the past eight months. The statements from both councils pointed out the alarming trend of violence and violation of human rights against Muslims in the Amhara region.
