The recent tragedy at the East Shewa Diocese has shaken the Church to its core, as four priests were reported to have been killed after being kidnapped. The priests, Abatekelmariam Asrat, Abba Kidane Mariam Tilahun, Abba Gebremaryam Abebe, and Hailemariam Woldesenbet, lost their lives in a brutal attack. However, Kidanemariam Gebresenbat managed to survive but sustained injuries during the incident.

The Oromia region Peace and Security Bureau confirmed the killings and identified the suspected perpetrators as members of the “OLF Shene” group. The bureau condemned the violence and assured the public that law enforcement measures were being taken to hold those responsible accountable.

The ancient monastery where the priests were based is home to valuable relics and heritage items. Unfortunately, the monastery has faced repeated instances of looting and burning, causing significant damage over time. The Church has called on federal and regional security agencies to take immediate action to protect the monks and the monastery from further attacks and safeguard the heritage site.

Although the Church did not explicitly name the suspected perpetrators, reports from a Church-affiliated TV station implicated the OLA armed group in the assault. The Oromia peace and security bureau stated that they were working alongside regional police to track down the perpetrators. They urged the local community to cooperate with the security forces and promised to keep the public informed about the progress of the investigations and law enforcement measures taken against the perpetrators.

Despite the accusations leveled against them, the OLA has not issued a statement in response to the killings and the allegations made by the Oromia security forces. The situation remains tense as authorities continue their efforts to bring the culprits to justice and uphold the rule of law.

As the community mourns the loss of the priests and grapples with the tragic event, it is essential for all stakeholders to work together to ensure the safety and security of religious institutions and heritage sites in the region. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by religious communities and the importance of upholding peace and harmony in the face of adversity.
