The upcoming Sirikwa Classic World Cross Country Gold Tour meeting at Lobo Village, Eldoret has attracted over 25 elite athletes from 10 different countries. Ethiopia leads the pack with eight entries, followed by Germany with five. Athletes from Great Britain, South Africa, Ukraine, Tanzania, Norway, Morocco, Romania, and Bahrain have also enlisted for the event.
The meet director, Barnaba Korir, expects more confirmations as the event approaches and anticipates a huge turnout compared to previous editions. Notable contenders include Lemlem Nibret and Meseret Yeshaneh from Ethiopia, who performed well at last year’s World Cross Country Championships. The women’s 10-kilometre race will also feature Kate Maltby from Great Britain and Glenrose Xaba from South Africa. Other contenders from Europe include Hanne Maridal from Norway and Maryna Nemchenko from Ukraine.
Kenyan athletes set to compete include Lilian Kasait, Pamela Kosgei, Sebastian Sawe, Ishmael Kipkurui, and Stanley Waithaka. German marathon champion Hendrik Pfeiffer will also be making a return after his performance at the Houston Half Marathon.
The men’s 10km race will see competition from former Asian 10,000m champion Alemu Bekele from Bahrain, Tanzania’s John Nahhay Wele, Nabil Rbaki from Morocco, and Romanian Ștefan Iulius Gavril.
Overall, the event promises to be a highly competitive showcase of talent from across the globe, with elite athletes vying for top honors in the various race categories.
