Ensuring the proper use of airspace and facilities to maximize opportunities…

In order to confirm the airspace control of airlines operating in Somalia and Somaliland, Ethiopian Airlines has temporarily suspended flights to the two countries. This was stated in a letter sent by the global aviation industry group.

The measures will include:

1. Other airlines will be allowed to use Ethiopian Airlines’ airspace for flights to Somaliland & Somalia

2. The IATA and ICAO organizations will assess the situation and determine the appropriate action following Somalia’s incorrect communication about its airspace.

3. Somalia owes more than $30 million in overdue fees.

# What can Somaliland do

1. Somaliland should invite JSL to discuss the issue and not interfere with the leadership of its airspace management

2. Any agreement reached should provide compensation for the interruption of airspace control and involve international courts and organizations

3. Somaliland is owed $70 million by Somalia since 2017 when flights were diverted to Somalia, negotiations should take place before any resolution

4. The world should be informed that Somalia is not compliant and lacks responsibility to manage its airspace, especially since the transfer of airspace management to be handed over in 2017. This issue should be assessed by relevant authorities.

If Somalia rectifies its communication with Somaliland and their airspace, the 2024 budget for Somaliland’s Aviation Authority will include at least $10 million for necessary equipment to ensure the safety of flights and proper communication with incoming flights.
