The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia, recently appointed Taye-Atske Selassie, has stated that the legal goodwill of Ethiopia to seek a peaceful resolution in obtaining access to the Red Sea should not be underestimated.
Speaking to local media, the minister emphasized that this is a matter concerning the national security and development of Ethiopia.
The minister noted that the international community now has a good understanding of Ethiopia’s efforts to peacefully access the Red Sea, following diplomatic efforts made in the last six months, while their approach remains within the scope of the law.
He stated that Ethiopia’s desire for Red Sea access does not contradict the realities, and therefore will not pose a threat to the internal stability of other countries.
Mr. Taye-Atske Selassie emphasized how Ethiopia is ready for extensive negotiations in the trilateral agreement with Somaliland and the significant progress on the GERD. Ethiopia’s history does not contradict our interests, and while some issues may need negotiation, both sides can benefit, as stated by the new Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia.
