The Ministry of Health in Eswatini recently received a significant boost in funding for its HPV vaccination program. This boost came in the form of a grant from the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI) amounting to E30 million ($1.6 million). The launch event for this grant was attended by esteemed dignitaries and health stakeholders, marking a milestone in the country’s efforts to combat cervical cancer and enhance immunization services.
Minister of Health Mduduzi Matsebula expressed his excitement about this development, highlighting the importance of the partnership with GAVI in strengthening the HPV vaccination program. The goal is to reduce cervical cancer significantly by 2030, and the introduction of the HPV vaccine in June 2023 for girls aged 9 to 14 has already shown progress with a coverage rate of 63.6% as of March 2024.
The collaboration with GAVI through the Middle-Income Countries Strategy (MICS) grant provides technical assistance for training, capacity building, communication, and demand creation. Minister Matsebula is optimistic that this partnership will help achieve a vaccination coverage rate exceeding 90% among the target population, ensuring that all eligible girls receive protection.
In addition to expressing gratitude to GAVI for their support, the Minister emphasized the government’s commitment to providing free and accessible immunization services to all eligible groups. The goal is not only to address cervical cancer but also to reach zero-dose children in the future. Healthcare workers were recognized for their dedication, and the activities under the GAVI Alliance grant were officially launched.
GAVI, the Vaccine Alliance, is a global health partnership that aims to increase access to immunization. By channelling a significant portion of donor assistance for health and immunization, GAVI has played a crucial role in immunizing millions of children worldwide and preventing millions of deaths. The alliance also works to improve the economics of vaccines, support price discrimination, and strengthen health systems in developing countries.
Overall, the partnership with GAVI is a significant step forward for Eswatini’s healthcare system, and it provides hope for a healthier and more immunized population. The Minister of Health’s commitment to leveraging this grant for the benefit of the country’s healthcare needs showcases the government’s dedication to improving public health outcomes. With continued efforts and collaborations like this, Eswatini is on the path to achieving its health goals and ensuring a healthier future for its citizens.
