The Indian High Commission in Eswatini is urging the country to take advantage of the Trade Agreement signed between the two nations back in 2002. High Commissioner Nam Prasad emphasized India’s interest in expanding exports, not just limited to crafts but across various industries. This can be facilitated through the existing Trade Agreement framework between India and Eswatini.

During a press conference discussing Eswatini’s participation in the 37th Surajkund International Mela Crafts Fair in India, Prasad expressed a desire for both countries to fully utilize the agreement. He highlighted the need for the Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Trade to thoroughly review the agreement and identify potential investment opportunities in both Eswatini and India.

One key provision of the Trade Agreement is the establishment of a joint trade balance committee. Prasad revealed that India has already nominated members for their side of the committee and urged Eswatini to do the same to initiate discussions on future collaboration.

In response, Minister of Commerce, Industry, and Trade Manqoba Khumalo emphasized the importance of discussing the trade balance between the two countries. He welcomed the idea of a joint committee to explore trade opportunities, beginning with handicrafts and expanding into larger sectors of the economy. Khumalo also acknowledged the support provided by the Indian government to Eswatini, particularly in the crafts industry.

Participation in the Mela Crafts Fair enabled the Eswatini team to engage with artisans from various countries, fostering knowledge exchange and global appreciation for traditional crafts. The event served as a platform for cultural diplomacy, showcasing Eswatini’s craftsmanship to a global audience and strengthening bilateral relations between Eswatini and India.

The fair not only facilitated the exchange of ideas and techniques but also led to the formation of new friendships that transcended borders and united people in a shared passion for preserving cultural heritage. Khumalo emphasized the role of the fair in enhancing mutual respect and friendship between the two nations.

Overall, the collaboration at the Mela Crafts Fair highlighted the beauty and craftsmanship of Eswatini to the world, promoting cultural diversity and strengthening ties between the two countries. It underscored the importance of leveraging existing agreements like the Trade Agreement to enhance economic cooperation and bilateral relations between India and Eswatini.
