One of the most surprising outcomes of the 2024 Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) national trials for the Africa Games in Asaba occurred in the women’s 400m final. The veteran quartermiler, Patience Okon-George, who had been dominating the home-based 400m women for more than ten years, was expected to be the star of the show. However, up-and-coming 400m runner, Esther Elo Joseph, stunned everyone with an exceptional performance at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, where the AFN had collaborated with Making of Champions (MoC) to organize the competition.
In a dramatic turn of events, Joseph took an early lead at the 200m bend and maintained her pace all the way to the finish line, completing the race in 52.00seconds, a personal best for her. The spectators were on their feet, celebrating the impressive victory of the new talent. Meanwhile, Okon-George finished a distant sixth with a time of 56.06 seconds, while Esther Okon came in second with 52.93secs. Uduak Udosoh took third place in 54.59secs, followed by Oluwabunmi Israel in fourth position with a time of 54.61secs, and Odot Effiong in fifth position with 54.79secs.
Following the race, Okon-George expressed disbelief at her performance, describing it as one of her worst days on the track. On the other hand, Ether Joseph expressed her satisfaction with her performance, stating that she came well-prepared and was not surprised by her own success. She also shared her ambitious goal of running under 49 seconds in the near future, emphasizing her determination to achieve this target through hard work and by the grace of God.
The men’s race was equally exciting, with Sikiru Adeyemi finishing emphatically in 46.26 seconds. Although he had hoped for a sub-45 second finish, he recognized the achievement as a good start and expressed his commitment to continue working towards his target in preparation for the African Games and the Olympics later in the year.
Overall, the 2024 AFN national trials for the Africa Games in Asaba showcased outstanding performances by both established athletes and emerging talents, bringing unexpected outcomes and setting the stage for an exciting season of athletics. The event was a testament to the depth of talent and the competitive spirit within Nigerian athletics, and it provided a platform for athletes to demonstrate their skills and determination as they pursue their goals on the track. The success of the competition also reflected the efforts of the AFN and MoC in organizing and promoting the sport, as well as the dedication of the athletes and coaches who continue to elevate Nigerian athletics to new heights.
