In his speech, the diplomat stated that despite Cabo Verde not being the country of choice for Italian cooperation, Italy has had a presence in important sectors of the archipelago both before and after independence.
“Even though Cabo Verde is not part of the group of countries preferred for Italian cooperation, we must highlight Italy’s indelible presence in important and pioneering sectors before and after national independence, particularly in civil aviation, telecommunications, as well as support for national development,” he said.
Estevão Vaz believes that there are still opportunities to further expand decentralized cooperation between Cabo Verde and Italy.
“As the country with the third largest economy in the European Union, there is room for us to continue to expand decentralized cooperation both within the framework of municipal relationships and through the involvement of Non-Governmental Organizations. In tourism, Italy still ranks sixth among the group of countries sending tourists to Cabo Verde, but there is endless potential in this area as well as in mobilizing more external investments,” he emphasized.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Rui Figueiredo Soares, stated that the appointment of Estevão Vaz comes at a time when the systemic redefinition of the country’s diplomatic network is being finalized.
“The appointment of Ambassador Estevão Vaz comes at a time when we are finalizing the systemic redefinition of Cabo Verde’s diplomatic and consular network in order to ensure universal coverage, that is, of all countries and international organizations,” he stressed.
Ambassador Estevão Vaz will serve as a non-resident liaison accredited to Greece, Turkey, and Serbia. The diplomat will also establish a liaison mission in Germany, Bosnia, Montenegro, San Marino, Armenia, and Macedonia.
Estevão Tavares Vaz was, until recently, the Consul General of Cabo Verde in Nice, France.
