Eritrea: World Health Day observed – Africa Links 24

On April 8, 2024, World Health Day was celebrated in Asmara with the theme “My Health-My Right”. The event was attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Health and representatives from various United Nations agencies in Eritrea.

Dr. Andebrhan Tesfatsion

Dr. Andebrhan Tesfatsion, the Acting Director General of Public Health at the Ministry, discussed Eritrea’s dedication to providing basic healthcare for all in line with the National Charter and Macro Policy. He highlighted efforts to improve the national health strategy for better and high-quality healthcare services.

Dr. Andebrhan emphasized investments in healthcare, initiatives for behavioral change, strengthening human resources, modernizing medical infrastructure, and engaging communities. He also shared achievements such as increased access to healthcare services for Eritreans within close proximity to their homes, high vaccination coverage, decreased new infections, and improved sanitation practices.

Dr. Nonso Ejiofor

Dr. Nonso Ejiofor, the WHO Representative in Eritrea, highlighted the significant health progress in the region over the past decade, including improvements in life expectancy, maternal and child mortality rates, and advancements in combating HIV/AIDS and TB. Efforts to eradicate diseases like polio and guinea worm disease are also making progress.

This year’s celebration marked the 28th national and 76th international observance of World Health Day, showcasing Eritrea’s commitment to health as a fundamental human right.
