Eritrea: Seminar on Preserving and Transferring Societal Values – Africa Links 24

On March 6, 2024, Ms. Tekea Tesfamicael, President of the National Union of Eritrean Women, led a seminar for union branch representatives and members of the People’s Front for Democracy and Justice (PFDJ) in Keren, focusing on the importance of preserving and transferring noble societal values to future generations in connection with International Women’s Day.

Ms. Tekea emphasized the significant role women have played in Eritrea’s history and urged them to enhance their involvement in development initiatives. She also highlighted how Eritrean women have overcome challenges by upholding esteemed values, encouraging them to boost organizational capabilities and actively participate in preserving and disseminating these values to future generations.

Ms. Tekea also urged union leaders to increase efforts in raising public awareness, particularly among women, to combat practices detrimental to women’s mental and physical well-being. Attendees expressed a desire for more events aimed at young women and suggested recognizing exemplary women to inspire others.

In a related event on March 8, a seminar was held in Barentu sub-zone to enhance women’s understanding of their historical contributions and engage them more fully in national matters. Ms. Yihdega Yohannes, head of the union branch in the Gash Barka Region, provided an overview of the pivotal role Eritrean women have played in the struggle for national independence and called for increased participation in union branch initiatives for 2024.
