President Isaias Afwerki met with a delegation led by Vice Admiral Vladimir Kasatonov, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy in Massawa on 02 April 2024. The discussions focused on strengthening bilateral ties established at the Africa-Russia Summit in St. Petersburg. Various areas of cooperation such as infrastructure, energy, mining, agriculture, marine resources, defense, and security were discussed.
The meeting also touched upon the potential of Russian support for peace and stability efforts in the Red Sea and the Horn of Africa regions. High-ranking Eritrean officials, including military leaders and ambassadors, attended the meeting.
President Isaias and Vice Admiral Kasatonov toured the Russian frigate Marshal Shaposhinkov, which was in port to commemorate the 30th Anniversary of diplomatic relations between Eritrea and Russia.
