Eritrea: New Dam Inaugurated in Shariki – Africa Links 24

On 27 February 2024, the community of Shariki in the Eleberet sub-zone celebrated the inauguration of a new dam on 24 February, a significant milestone in local agricultural and environmental development efforts. The project was a joint effort between the Ministry of Agriculture and the 34th Division of the Eritrean Defense Forces.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by notable figures including Ambassador Abdella Musa, Governor of the Anseba Region, Brigadier General Tekle Libsu, Commander of the Popular Force Command, and various heads of the People’s Front for Democracy and Justice (PFDJ) in the region, along with other guests.

Ambassador Musa praised the Defense Forces for their role in improving the community’s living standards and environmental conservation efforts through the greening campaign. He mentioned the construction of several dams over the past three years, with plans for ten more in the future. Ambassador Musa encouraged increased community participation in these projects.

Mr. Gebremeskel Tewolde, acting administrator of the Eleberet sub-zone, praised the Defense Forces for their commitment to national sovereignty and their contributions to development programs. He highlighted the role of the dams in bolstering irrigation farming and agricultural development in the sub-zone.

Lieutenant Colonel Gebreab Tsehaye, Commander of the 34th Division, commended the Defense Forces for their dedication to development programs and their role in the construction of dams in various locations. He noted the progress in Shariki and other areas.

The inauguration of the new dam in Shariki signifies a significant advancement in the region’s agricultural and environmental sustainability, showcasing successful collaboration between the Defense Forces and the public in development initiatives.
