Eritrea: International Women’s Day Celebrated in Central Region – Africa Links 24

The Expo Compound in Asmara was filled with enthusiasm as International Women’s Day was celebrated at the regional level on 8 March 2024, with the theme “Equality: Our Core Principle.” The event saw the attendance of senior government and PFDJ officials, along with other distinguished guests.

Ms. Alem Belai, the head of the regional union branch, highlighted the importance of International Women’s Day for Eritrean women, emphasizing their dedication to achieving full emancipation and preserving their accomplishments. She acknowledged the progress made in gender equality and opportunities, considering them essential to Eritrea’s political, cultural, and historical achievements. Ms. Alem also emphasized the need for a united effort to instill these values in younger generations and ensure the creation of fair and equal opportunities.

At the event, awards were presented to winners of a debate competition among 22 high school students and a general knowledge contest among employees from various government institutions. Outstanding female students who achieved above 96 points in the eighth-grade national examination were also acknowledged.

In Assab, Southern Red Sea Region, International Women’s Day was commemorated under the same theme. The event was graced by Ambassador Mohammed-Seid Mantai, Regional Governor, and Brig. Gen. Abraham Andom, Commander of the Eastern Command.

The celebrations in Assab included statements from the National Union of Eritrean Women and its partners, as well as cultural and artistic performances reflecting the theme of the day. Awards were distributed to winners of various competitions and outstanding female students who excelled in the eighth-grade national examination.
