Asmara, 29th February 2024 – Recent excavations at the Adulis archaeological site have uncovered ceramics dating back to historical stages between 1500 to 500 BC.

Archaeologists working at the site have emphasized the importance of this discovery in connecting previous historical periods from the 1st to the 7th centuries with this new finding.

Dr. Tsegay Medin, the project coordinator, highlighted the significance of the various ceramic artifacts found at the Adulis Archaeological site, spanning different historical eras. He emphasized the potential of this new discovery to enrich the history of the country and the region through further research and study.

Prof. Serena Massa, an Italian archaeologist and project member, highlighted Adulis as the only ancient town in Sub-Saharan Africa built with stones, holding significant international historical importance. She also suggested that the ancient manuscripts and monuments could establish crucial links between the Adulis civilization and that of Punt Land, potentially leading to a new phase of excavation.

Archaeologist Dr. Abraham Zere mentioned that this discovery will enhance our understanding of ancient civilizations in the Horn of Africa and the Southern Red Sea region.

The Adulis project began in 2011 through collaboration between Eritrean and Italian experts, allowing for the exchange of experiences and expertise.
