Eritrea: Cardiac Surgery for Children at Orotta Referral Hospital – Africa Links 24

On March 15, 2024, a team of medical professionals from Genoa University, working in collaboration with Eritrean experts, successfully conducted cardiac surgery on 12 children at the Orotta National Referral Hospital.

Mr. Tewolde Yohannes, the hospital’s General Manager, reported that the surgeries were performed between March 10 and 14 on children from various regions of Eritrea who had been identified for treatment.

Furthermore, Mr. Tewolde mentioned that the program will continue until March 16, with plans to conduct surgeries on an additional 20 children.

Prof. Giovanni Stellin, the team’s coordinator, mentioned that this visit marks their 20th trip to Eritrea, where they have performed cardiac surgeries on a total of 150 children so far.

The parents of the children expressed their gratitude for the opportunity given to their children and encouraged other parents to seek prompt medical attention for similar issues.

It is important to note that a German medical team conducted general surgery on 85 children at the Orotta Referral Hospital from February 26 to March 8.
