Massawa, 21 March 2024 – The town of Afabet joyfully celebrated the 36th anniversary of the passing of Nadew Iz and the liberation of Afabet on 19 March, honoring the occasion with a strong sense of patriotism.
The celebration featured military and public parades, as well as signs commemorating the heroic actions of the offensive. Cultural and artistic performances were also part of the event, adding to the seriousness and joy of the day.
The event was attended by key figures such as Ms. Asmeret Abraha, Governor of the Northern Red Sea Region, Mr. Rezene Adonai, Secretary of the PFDJ in the region, Army Commanders, and many residents of Afabet.
Mr. Ahmed Mohammed-Nur Rejib, Administrator of the Afabet sub-zone, emphasized the importance of this year’s anniversary, noting the Eritrean people’s achievement of national sovereignty, stability, unity, and active participation in national development efforts.
During her speech at the event, Ms. Asmeret Abraha reflected on the historical significance of Nadew Iz’s defeat 36 years ago, highlighting how it boosted the Eritrean people’s morale, hastened the end of colonial rule, and signaled the upcoming full independence of the country.
It is worth noting that the Eritrean People’s Liberation Front (EPLF) successfully carried out a rapid offensive from 17-19 March 1988 at the Nakfa Front, decisively defeating the Derg’s Nadew Command, comprised of 20,000 soldiers and advanced military equipment.
