A 29-year-old man has been claiming to be the boyfriend of Kilifi Principal Magistrate Ivy Wasike since 2020. Cryspinus Malenya Inyama, a caretaker at a private school in Kiamaiko, Kariobangi, Nairobi, has allegedly made a fortune through this false claim.

Inyama has been accused of cybersquatting using a fake identity and gaining financial benefits and other favors for three years. He appeared before Kilifi Senior Resident Magistrate Daniel Sitati where he was charged with soliciting money from Wasike’s colleagues, friends, and relatives, using a Safaricom line formerly owned by the magistrate.

He was also charged with falsely representing himself as Ivy Wasike to an advocate of the High Court of Kenya and defrauding the advocate. The magistrate reported the matter to Kilifi Police Station, resulting in Inyama’s arrest by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) in Nairobi.

Inyama pleaded guilty and is scheduled for sentencing on February 13. Wasike reported the matter to Safaricom customer care with no success before taking legal action. She acquired the Safaricom line in 2010-2011 and noticed in 2020 that the number was being used by someone else.

Inyama allegedly solicited funds from members of the public known to Wasike using her previous contacts obtained from the old line. This false claim negatively affected the magistrate’s image and led to uncomfortable inquiries from colleagues and acquaintances.

In addition to financial gain, Inyama’s false claim as Wasike’s boyfriend led to a negative image and perception about her and her colleagues in official and social gatherings. The case is ongoing and further legal actions are expected to be taken against Inyama for his fraudulent activities.
