Ghanaian digital music expert Jonathan ‘Jonilar’ Nii Laryea has emphasized the significance of understanding industry standards, noting that many talented creatives face challenges due to a lack of awareness about key aspects that could impact their success. Jonilar, who also serves as the Ghana country director and brand ambassador for Uganda-based aggregator Omziki, shared this insight during the second edition of the Digital Music Education Seminar that took place on 23 March at the Okumah Executive Lodge in the Bono East region of Ghana.
The seminar’s theme, “Bridging the Gap between Music Education and the Industry,” aimed to equip musicians and creatives with essential knowledge about the music industry. Other speakers at the event included health professional and MC Yaw Ampofo Adomako, public relations expert Isaac Sosito, as well as broadcasters Gideon Kwame Sarkodie and Bretuoba Kwabena.
Jonilar highlighted the importance of musicians not only relying on social media for support but also investing in learning how to establish connections within the industry. He urged local media to focus on creating radio content that educates creatives and reiterated his call from the previous year’s event for the government and other stakeholders to invest in digital music incubator programs in junior and senior high schools nationwide. At last year’s seminar, Jonilar proposed a one-year tax break for media and influencers promoting arts, music, and tourism to support Ghana’s creative and cultural sectors.
Ampofo emphasized the significance of mental wellness for creatives, stressing its role in preventing unforeseen consequences. Kwame Sarkodie advised musicians to build business relationships with media professionals to enhance their visibility on the radio. Sosito underscored the importance of improving communication skills and seeking professional assistance in managing one’s brand.
In an interview with Music In Africa, Jonilar expressed his excitement about the impact of the event, noting the high turnout and the commitment of musicians and creatives to learning new ways to advance their careers.
Overall, the Digital Music Education Seminar provided a platform for industry experts and creatives to exchange knowledge and explore strategies for success in the music industry. By focusing on industry standards, networking, mental wellness, and professional development, participants gained valuable insights that can contribute to their growth and success in the competitive music landscape.
