The Egyptian Public Prosecution recently made headlines for ordering the detention of a YouTuber over spreading false news regarding the death of a student at al-Arish University. This move comes after the Public Prosecutor’s directives to investigate misinformation that has been circulating on various social media platforms.
According to a statement from the Public Prosecution, the YouTuber known as “Mo Silva” was found to have disseminated false information through his accounts on TikTok, YouTube, and Facebook. Among the claims made by Mo Silva were that the defendants in the student’s death at Al-Arish University took obscene photos of the deceased, threatened to publish them, and killed her with poison after she sought help from college administrators who allegedly refused due to the defendants’ families’ influence.
The Public Prosecution stated that such false claims have the potential to threaten public security and must be dealt with swiftly. The YouTuber admitted to his actions, acknowledging that he posted the information without verifying its authenticity in an attempt to gain more views and followers. He claimed to have sourced the information from other websites.
As a result, the prosecution ordered the YouTuber’s detention pending further investigations and also initiated inquiries into other accounts that were spreading similar false claims. This case sheds light on the importance of verifying information before sharing it online and the consequences of spreading false news.
The victim, Naira Salah, tragically passed away on February 25 after being transferred to al-Arish General Hospital due to severe abdominal pain. Initial reports in the media suggested that she had committed suicide by taking poison tablets (Aluminium phosphide) after being blackmailed by colleagues. However, Salah’s family has vehemently denied these claims, adding another layer of complexity to the case.
This incident underscores the potential dangers of misinformation and the need for responsible reporting. It highlights the impact that false news can have on individuals and communities, especially in sensitive cases like this one involving the death of a young student.
The detention of the YouTuber serves as a warning to others who may seek to exploit tragic events for personal gain. It sends a clear message that spreading false information will not be tolerated and can have serious consequences. Moving forward, it is essential for individuals to verify the accuracy of information before sharing it, especially when it involves sensitive topics like death and suicide.
In conclusion, the case of the YouTuber detained for spreading false news about the death of a student at al-Arish University underscores the importance of responsible reporting and the potential dangers of misinformation. It serves as a reminder of the impact that false news can have and the need for accountability and integrity in media and online platforms.
