Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi declared on Sunday that Egypt is firmly committed to supporting Somalia and its security, and will not tolerate any threats to its stability. He specifically rejected an agreement recently made between Somaliland and Ethiopia which involved the acquisition of a port in the Red Sea.
Speaking at a joint press conference with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mahmoud at the Ettihadiya Presidential Palace in Cairo, Sisi emphasized that Egypt stands in solidarity with Somalia and refuses to interfere in its internal affairs. He made it clear that the agreement between Somaliland and Ethiopia is unacceptable to Egypt and to the international community.
Sisi reiterated Egypt’s steadfast support for Somalia in its fight against terrorism and vowed to continue to strengthen their relations. He also emphasized Egypt’s willingness to intervene if Somalia requests assistance in defending against any threats.
The President commended the recent success of the Somali government in lifting the decades-old ban on the supply of weapons and equipment to the country. He also expressed Egypt’s readiness to enhance its relationships with African and Arab countries, including Somalia, in various fields.
Additionally, Sisi addressed the controversial agreement between Somaliland and Ethiopia, stating that Egypt had promptly rejected any interference in Somalia’s affairs and expressed concern over the deal’s potential impact on Somalia’s independence and territorial integrity. He urged for cooperation and development rather than any attempts to undermine the security and sovereignty of other nations.
Sisi underscored that Somalia, as an Arab country, has the right to collective defense against any external threats according to the Arab League Charter. He assured that his remarks were not meant as a threat but serve to convey Egypt’s commitment to protecting Somalia at its request.
In conclusion, President Sisi reiterated Egypt’s commitment to fostering peace, development, and reconstruction and reassured President Mahmoud that Egypt stands by Somalia’s side. He called for dialogue and cooperation, emphasizing the importance of resolving disputes without compromising the security and independence of other nations.
